Attorney General Mahbubey AlamAttorney General Mahbubey Alam’s opinion on quotas for freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren in the civil service is now with the government.
“Public administration ministry Officials came to my offices today (Monday),” the state’s top legal officer told Bangla Tribune.
Earlier in the day, he said that his opinion will be based on the court’s verdict over Freedom Fighters’ quota. “The government will take the decision. So, I have no comments on the issue for the media,” Alam said.
The government panel formed to evaluate the quota system wrote to the attorney general last week seeking his opinion over the issue.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam, who leads the seven-member panel, told the media on Aug 12 that they recommend ‘almost’ abolishing quotas and merit-based recruitment should be prioritised.
He, however, said they would seek the Supreme Court’s opinion about the 30 percent quota for freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren.
In a verdict in 2015, the Appellate Division of the SC said, “The High Court Division observed that the reservation of 30 percent quota for the children of freedom fighters shall be followed strictly.”
