The Cabinet has initially approved a law to recognise degrees offered by Qawmi madrasas.
It will recognise Dawrah-e Hadith (Taqmil) as equivalent to masters’ degrees (Islamic Studies and Arabic).
“We have been recognising them (Qawmi qualifications) but now the legal framework is coming,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said told the media after Monday’s cabinet meeting, where the law received the green light.
He said the circular issued in April 2017 on the matter is now being turned into a law.
“A Qawmi Madrasa Education Board will be formed. Around 1.5 million students go to Qawmi madrasas. The law aims to include these huge numbers of students under mainstream education system,” said Cabinet Secretary Alam.
On Apr 11, 2017, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced that the highest educational qualifications offered by Qawmi madrasas would be recognised as equivalent to a Masters degree.
Two days later, the official circular was issued, a move which drew flak.
The Cabinet on Monday also initially approved the Bangladesh Fisheries Institute Act 2018 and cleared amendments to the 2011 MoU with Russia on the Rooppur nuclear power plant.
