Voting ends in two Sylhet polling stations

Voting underway in two Sylhet polling stations on Saturday (August 11).Voting in two polling stations in Sylhet city have ended on Saturday after they were postponed during the polls on Jul 30 due to irregularities.
The voting started at 8am and ended at 4pm.
The fate of the mayor as well two general councillors of wards 24 and 27 will be be decided through the fresh voting in the two centres at Gazi Burhanuddin Garam Dewan Government Primary School and Hobinandi Government Primary School.
On Aug 1, the Election Commission set the date for reelection.
There are 2,221 voters at Gazi Burhanuddin Garam Dewan Government Primary School centre while 2,566 at Hobinandi Government Primary School one.
BNP mayoral candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury has taken a lead of 4,626 votes in 132 centres out of 134. Ariful bagged 90,496 votes while Awami League’s BadarUddin Ahmed Kamran polled 85,870.
The BNP candidate now needs only 81 votes in the re-election to the postponed centres having a total of 4,787 voters.
The announcement of the results was postponed as the number of votes in the two centres is higher than the difference between the two leading candidates’ tallies.
Meanwhile, fresh voting in 14 more centres is being also held to elect the ward councillor from reserved seat-9 as two candidates bagged identical number of votes in the SCC polls.
