KhulnaA fresh Nipah infected woman has been admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
Twenty-year-old Rashida is undergoing treatment since Jan 11 at the hospital. She is the first patient after 2016, suffering from the fatal infectious disease.
“A medical board has confirmed her infection by Nipah virus. As Rashida is risky for other patients, she is being treated separately at the hospital’s Medicine unit-1,” said KMCH Medicine Department chief SM Kamal Hossain.
According to the physicians, around 80 percent Nipah virus patients die due to encephalitis. An awareness programme of Khulna Divisional Health Office was effective to prevent this lethal viral disease in the last two years.
The Nipah virus is a type of RNA virus, which can both spread between people and from other animals to people. Spread typically spreads direct contact with an infected source. The virus normally circulates among specific types of fruit bats.
