A suspected female peddler has been killed in what the police described as a shootout reported from Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila.
The incident, where four policemen were also injured, was reported from Teknaf’s Whykong union early on Sunday (Jan 5), confirmed Teknaf Model police OC Pradip Kumar Das.
Police identified the deceased as 40-year-old Samuda Begum.
OC Das said that police raided a salt field in Kharangkhali Magpara area of the upazila after being tipped off about a drug consignment.
“Sensing the presence of the police, the drug traders fired on them. Police fired back in self defence,” he told Bangla Tribune’s correspondent.
He added that Samuda’s bullet-ridden was recovered and taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctors gave her primary treatment and sent her to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. “The doctors declared her dead when she was taken there.”
Teknaf Upazila Health Complex confirmed Samuda being brought in and added that the policemen were released after treatment.
