An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as shootout.
The incident was reported on Monday (Dec 30) evening from Noyapara camp for Rohingyas at the southeastern district’s Teknaf Upazila, said RAB.
The deceased has been identified as Anowar Sadek who RAB claimed a listed drug peddler.
“RAB conducted a raid on a tip-off about consignments of smuggled yaba tablets at the camp on Monday evening. Sensing the presence of the force, some Rohingya perpetrators opened fire at the RAB troop. RAB had to fire back in self defence when 4 to 5 drug peddlers managed to escape into the hills and a body was found at the scene,” said RAB-15 Captain Azim Ahmed.
“The body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy,” said Ahmed.
“8,000 yaba tablets and a locally made firearm were seized from the scene,” added the elite police official.
RAB said two of their members were also injured in the incident.
