Construction of the gas pipeline will begin in Rangpur from next month and the work is supposed to end by 2022.

To expand industries in Rangpur, the government has launched a Tk 18 billion project, said deputy MD of Western Gas Company Limited, Shailaja Nanda Basak.
In 2011, during a tour of Rangpur, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made a promise to supply gas via pipeline, he said adding: “Already, the feasibility has been done by the Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL).”
Work for the line in Rangpur, Nilphamari and Peerganj will start next January and end in June, 2022.
Once the gas was available, big industries would come up and employment for millions would be generated, said Shailaja Nanda Basak.
Gas will also be supplied to special economic zones, BSCIC industrial park and factories in the upazilas.
Acting president of Rangpur chamber, Moztaba Hossain Ripon said: “The government aims at equal development for all and energy is a precondition for development. Once implemented, this project will create mass employment.”
