Police gun barrelA suspect in 13 cases was killed in what police described as ‘shootout’ at Noakhali’s Sonaimuri Upazila early on Sunday (Dec 22).
The deceased has been identified as Ratan Miah of upazila’s Shonapur Union. He is accused of criminal activities including murder, drug peddling, and robbery.
“On Saturday (Dec 21) afternoon, police have arrested Ratan Miah who is a suspect in 13 cases. At night, police took him at Podipara village of the Upazila to recover arms and drugs. There his accomplices opened fire on police, in retaliation police had to fire back triggering the shootout,” said Sonaimuri police OC Abdus Samad.
“Ratan was caught in the line of cross-firing and was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead,” said OC Samad.
Three law enforcers have been injured during the ‘shootout’, he added.
According to police, a local pipe gun, four rounds of bullets and 35 pieces of yaba tablets have been recovered from the scene.
