Fear of arrest in Borhanuddin over ransacking of Hindu homes

On Oct 20, a group of people brought out a procession in Borhanuddin Bazar protesting a Facebook post “hurting religious sensitivities” by a Hindu man, which turned into a massive clash with police. FOCUS BANGLAOne month has passed after a Facebook post triggered a police-public clash in Borhanuddin, Bhola.
In that event, 4 persons died, hundreds were injured and 10-12 Hindu homes were vandalized. Biplob Chandra Baidya, the person whose Facebook account was used to spark the violence is in prison.
The police, however, are primarily certain that Biplob’s account was hacked. In the case lodged under digital security act, three persons are in prison.
Meanwhile, president of Goura Nitai Asram temple, Satya Prasad Das, has lodged a case accusing the police and 5,000 people. This has resulted in unease in the area.
Bhola police SP Sarkar Md Kaisar says: “No one is being harassed for the case; attackers are being identified through video footage and then caught.”
The families of four killed persons were given Tk 500,000 each from the government as compensation.
A probe report on the incident by police head quarter and Bhola administration has been submitted to relevant quarters.
SP Kaiser said: “The situation in Borhanuddin and Bhola is normal.”
A ten-member team led by Bhola Muslim Oikya Parishad moulana Abdur Rahman Khan met Bhola district administrator Masud Alam Siddiq and police SP Sarkar Kaiser to demand the withdrawal of a case that accuses unknown 5,000 people for the sectarian conflagration.
The Muslim leaders said that many innocent people are also in a state of terror because of the case.
The police HQ is known to be working over the Facebook post from where the damaging post was uploaded.
Borhanuddin Puja committee secretary Indrajit Dey said: “We are no longer in fear and want the attackers of our homes and temple to be arrested and punished.”
