Nearly 20kg gold stolen from Benapole customs vault

Front gate of Benapole Customs House, FILE PHOTOA huge quantity of gold have been stolen from the vault of the customs at the Benapole land port in Jashore.


“It was a planned heist, The police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been already asked to launch an investigation,” customs Assistant Commissioner Uttam Chakma said on Monday (Nov 11).
“Detail list of stolen things can be announced after a primary investigation is done,” he added.





According to sources, the thieves disabled CCTV cameras at the customs office premises' old building and made off with over 19 kg gold. They said the heist took place any time between Friday (Nov 8) and Sunday (Nov 11), during the weekend coupled with a public holiday.

The vault housed valuable items siezed by law enforcers and border forces during raids and operations.

Additional Superintendent of Police Towhidul Islam, who heads the Special Branch (SB) in Jashore, said, “The customs department has started a case over the theft. Police have started investigation.”
