A total of 364 tonnes of onion have entered through the Chattogram port after prices kept rising in kitchen markets for the past several weeks due to India’s decision to curb exports.
According to Chattogram port sources on Monday (Sept 30), three importers: Jenny Enterprise, NS International and Hafiz Corporation brought in the consignments of onion from Egypt and China.
Chattogram Port Authority Director (Traffic) Enamul Karim said: “Onion is being unloaded from two container vessels. The other will be unloaded after getting berth.”
It takes one or two days for the onions to finish unloading and taxation.
However, more container vessels loaded with onion are still on their way to Chattogram port.
The import of onions from Egypt and China were due to the ban on onion exports from India on Sunday (Sept 29), causing a price spiral in onion markets.
