Two ‘drug peddlers’ from Myanmar have been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) described as shootout.
The incident was reported early on Monday (Sept 30) from Jaliyapara area in Teknaf upazila’s Hila union, said Teknaf-2 BGB battalion chief Lt Col Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan.
The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Mohammad Younus and 27-year-old Mohammad Jamal, who the BGB claims were drug peddlers.
“BGB conducted a raid at the area after being tipped-off that a group of drug peddlers took a position there. BGB cordoned off the area and asked them to surrender. Defying the BGB's order, the yaba peddlers opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back which triggered a shootout,” said Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan.
“Later, two bullet-hit persons were found in the area and rushed to Taknaf Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the doctor declared them dead,” said Teknaf-2 BGB battalion chief.
50,000 yaba tablets, two locally-made firearms and three rounds of ammunition were seized from the scene, he added.
BGB claimed that three of their members were injured in the shootout.
Dr Shankar Chandra Deb Nath at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex said, “Two bullet-hit Myanmar citizens were brought to the hospital. The injured BGB members were released from the hospital after giving first aid.”
The bodies have been kept at the hospital for autopsy.
A case has been filed with Teknaf police regarding the matter.
