General Secretary of Bhai Bhai Club of Chandpur, Mizanur Rahman, claims that in his club, religious sermons are arranged, but two days ago, the local administration sealed its premises on allegations of unethical operations.
Mizanur Rahman says: “We do not have gambling sessions at the club; we have Islamic gatherings and hold regular sporting tournaments.”
Almost all sporting clubs in Chandpur used to be illuminated a few days ago after dark and gambling was the main attraction. These establishments are now silent.
After a strict warning from the PM, the district administration has taken a firm step.
Former president of Chandpur Press Club, Iqbal Hossain Patwary, said: “Gambling was regularly arranged at the Muktijoddha Sangsad Bhaban and this is intolerable; such unethical practices should have been stopped long ago.”
Reportedly, there is also internet-based gambling.
Chandpur Superintendent of police Mahbubur Rahman said: “We are maintaining surveillance on the clubs and, if we hear of any gambling we will take immediate steps.”
Deputy Commissioner Majedur Rahman Khan says: “We have given an order to stop all illegal acts and all clubs have been warned.”
