The area by the Bholanagar Bus stand on the Narsingdi-Dhaka-Sylhet highway was once a garbage disposal area with people dumping waste indiscriminately.
As a result, there was a pervasive stench in the area. However, around forty tonnes of waste were removed to turn the area into a flower garden.
The cleaning initiative was taken by voluntary organisation, ‘BD Clean Narsingdi’.
Coordinator of the organisation, Toukir Ahmed, said: “BD Clean carries out cleaning work on certain days at particular areas and people voluntarily take part in it.”
They were also helped by local councilor who arranged a truck for them to take the large amount of rubbish.
For five days in a row, six trucks of garbage were removed. Later, a garden was created on the area with the help of a local businessman.
Coordinator of BD Clean, said: “Many of the volunteers are school students and made contribution from their tiffin money; in the last one year, cleaning operation was carried out at 40 spots.”
Saying that the aim of the organisation is to clean all areas, he added: “We also need awareness of the government and with help from local administration, can clean the city.”
“On the 50th anniversary of independence, we want to create a model Narsingdi city,” he added.
