Witnesses and police said that shots were heard on Saturday night from the Shalbagan camp at Teknaf Upazila.
“A police team was despatched as soon as the incident was reported. We checking for any casualties and the people at the camp have been asked not to panic,” Sub-Inspector Mohammad Monir of the outpost at Nayapara Camp told Bangla Tribune late on Saturday.
Sayedul Amin, the Rohingya leaders of the Shalban Camp, said they have reported the authorities after shootings were heard from the hills in the west just after 8pm.
“Massive gunfire was heard. But we have no idea who was behind it,” said Badrul Islam, a Rohingya leader.
Sources say that yaba smugglers and armed groups in collusion with some Rohigyas are now running drugs and guns as well as are involved in robbery and abduction in the area. According to them, shootings often erupt over turf control.
