Rohingya refugees gather to mark the second anniversary of the exodus at the Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, August 25, 2019. REUTERSDue to a few extremist Rohingyas, crimes are soaring at camps in Ukhia and Teknaf. As a result, murder, robbery, rape, assault of police, human trafficking and abduction are taking place.
To control crime, police lodged 471 cases in the last two years, accusing 1,088 persons. Law enforcers say that crime rates have soared in 34 Rohingya camps and due to the radical acts of some Rohingyas, others live in terror.
After dark, crimes are being committed in the camps. Kutupalong camp leader Mohamamd Yunus Arman, says: “It’s unfortunate to face such anarchy in another country.”
Instead of focusing on returning to our homeland, a section of Rohingyas are carrying out terrorist activities, he deplored.
Rohingya leader of Modhurchora camp of Kutupalong, Dil Mohammad, said: “The unregistered Rohingyas face discrimination and newly arrived often face attack after dark.”
Convener of the Rohingya repatriation committee and Ukhia upazila Awami League president, Hamidul Huq Chowdhury, observes: “Due to crimes of the Rohingyas, the people of the whole district are in panic; the environment is facing threats.”
“We expect a robust intervention of law enforcers to discipline the Rohingyas,” he added.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar Md Iqbal Hossain, adds: “Internal feud has risen among the Rohingyas; due to contention over clan, leadership family issues, murders have been committed.”
To control crime, 1,090 police personnel are working under nine camps along with law enforcers in civil dress, he added.
Rohingyas came to Bangladesh in huge numbers after Aug 25, 2017 to flee a Myanmar army crackdown. All of them are living in camps in Ukhia and Teknaf.
For humanitarian reasons, Bangladesh is providing all facilities to the Rohingyas, with local and international NGOs providing medicine, temporary shelter, food, education and entertainment. The government is also pursuing diplomatic channels to send Rohingyas back to Rakhine but many Rohingyas are getting involved in crime. Weapons and yaba are being recovered from them.
