Two killed in Cox's Bazar 'shootout'

ShootoutTwo suspected Rohingya drug traders have been killed in reported gunfights in Cox's Bazar.

The incidents occurred on early Thursday (Aug 22).

In Cox's Bazar, two Rohingyas, suspected of being drug traders, were killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) near the Ulubonia point of the Naf river in Whykong union of Teknaf upazila.

The deceased are Md Saker, 22, from Ukhiya's Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp, and Nurul Alam, 30, from Muchni camp in Teknaf, confirmed Teknaf BGB 2 Deputy Commander Major Shariful Islam Jomaddar.

He said acting on information that some drug trader would be smuggling a consignment of yaba inside Bangladesh using the Naf river, a BGB team conducted a drive in the area.

Realizing that police were present, the drug traders opened fire at the BGB force, which forced them to strike back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight.

Later, BGB officials retrieved two bodies from the crime scene and sent them to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

They also recovered 50,000 yaba pills and some weapons from the spot.
