A CNG-run auto-rickshaw has plummeted into the Dashani river in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur after a bridge over the river collapsed.

Road links between Jamalpur and Roumari main road in Kurigram snapped following the incident that occurred on Tuesday (Aug 13) afternoon.

Local people said that as soon as the CNG-run auto-rickshaw got on the bridge, it collapsed into the river beneath taking the vehicle with it.

Four out of the five passengers onboard the vehicle were injured in the incident, they added.

Local people rescued the passengers while divers of the Fire Service and Civil Defence pulled the vehicle from the river.

Gaibandha Union Parishad Chairman Maksudur Rahman said that the soil beneath the bridge had been washed away in recent floods, weakening its structure.

Islampur police station Officer in Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said that local residents had been suffering much after the bridge collapsed.
