Two alleged drug peddlers have been killed in Cox's Bazar in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as a shootout.
The incident was reported early on Monday (Jul 29) from North Shilkhali area in Baharchara of Teknaf Upazila, said RAB.
The deceased have been identified as 42-year-old Abdur Rahman and 31-year-old Omar Faruk.
RAB 2 Company Commander Mohiuddin Farooqi said, “Being tipped off, we set up two temporary check posts in Teknaf Marine Drive Road, adjacent to the district's Baharchara area, in order to catch their associates.
“This morning, a private car speeded away from the check post, disobeying the signal to stop.”
He said: "We chased the car, until it crashed into one of the milestones. The perpetrators opened fire on us, forcing us to fire back in self defense that left two of the drug peddlers injured.”
Later, they were declared dead when taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
"300 bottles of Phensedyl, a pistol, 4,000 yaba tablets, four rounds of ammunition and a private car were seized from the scene," said the elite force official before adding, "Three RAB members, Nayek Abdur Rahman, Soldier Liton and Nurul Islam, were injured in the incident."
