An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Jashore's Sharsha Upazila in what the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) described as a shootout.

The incident was reported early on Saturday (Jul 27) from the upazila's Agravulot border area, said BGB.

The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Sujan.

"When a team of BGB was patrolling in the Panchvulot border area around 9pm on Friday (Jul 26), they noticed that a group of drug peddlers were smuggling a huge consignment of Phensedyl from India through the border. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug peddlers hurled bomb to the BGB members. A BGB member, sergeant Akmol Hossain was injured," said Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdur Rahim Haolader of Baghachra police station.

"After chasing the group, the BGB members managed to detain two drug peddlers and later, BGB launched another drive to arrest the other smugglers at Agravulot border area. As soon as the BGB team reached the area, a group of drug peddlers opened fire on them, prompting the BGB members to fire back in self defense which triggered the shootout," said SI Haolader.

"Sujan was caught in line of cross firing. Being informed, police recovered the body around 4.30am and sent it to Jashore General Hospital for autopsy" he said.

"Three hundred bottles of Phensedyl were seized from the scene," said the SI before adding, "The injured BGB member was admitted to Jessore Armed Forces Hospital and referred to be admitted at a hospital in Dhaka for better treatment."
