A court in Lalmonirhat has sentenced a college teacher to life in prison for rape.
Convict Abdul Motaleb was also slapped a fine of Tk 10,000, failing to pay which will cause another 6 months behind the bars.
On Monday (July 2), Judge Md Reza Alamgir of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict with convict on the dock.
Motaleb, a BCS education intake, was a lecturer in Patgram Govt. Jasmuddin Kazi Abdul Gani Degree College until he was suspended in August 2014 soon after the charges were brought.
“The convict was appointed as college teacher in the 33th BCS, but was on suspension from Aug 7, 2014 on charges of raping a neighbour while studying at the Rajshahi University,” Judge Alamgir said while pronouncing the verdict.
According to court documents, Motaleb raped his neighbour’s daughter on promises of marrying her.
“We were expecting death sentence, but not aggrieved over the court’s verdict,” victim’s father Lokman Hossain told the media.
The defence, however, said they will decide on their next step after going through the verdict. “My client Abdul Motaleb has been convicted on false charges.”
