UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres (Left) and WB Group President Jim Yong Kim (Right).United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim reached Cox’s Bazar on Monday morning.
They landed at Cox's Bazar airport by a special flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines around 8:30am.
The duo will visit Rohingya communities and humanitarian workers in Cox’s Bazar district to advocate for increased donor support.
After holding a press meeting with the foreign ministry and international organization officials, they will start for Kutupalong transit camp, said the district administration sources.
A press conference has been scheduled at 2pm on the Rohingya camp visit.
They are expected to return to the capital at 5am. Another press meeting to be held at Radisson Hotel at 7pm on Monday, sources said.
Earlier in 2008, Guterres visited the Rohingya camp as the chief of the UN refugee agency.
The visit also aims to lay the groundwork for further dialogue with the government of Bangladesh on medium-term planning for the refugee situation and to reiterate the UN and the World Bank’s support for finding comprehensive solutions to the situation of the Rohingya people, said the UN earlier.
Since August last year, more than 700,000 Rohingya have taken shelter from violence in Myanmar in the Cox’s Bazar district, making it the world’s largest and fastest growing refugee camp, and putting pressure on the environment, existing infrastructure, and social services that were already constrained.
