‘Drug peddler’ killed in Kushtia ‘shootout’

Photo shows a police gun barrel.An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Kushtia in what the police described as a shootout.
The incident was reported around 1pm on Saturday (Jul 20) from Harra area in the district’s Sadar Upazila, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Rafiqul Islam, who police said was wanted in several cases filed at different police stations in the district.
“Being tipped-off that two groups of drug dealer were engaging in a shootout, police conducted a raid in the area. As soon as police reached in the area, the drug peddlers opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back in self defense,” said Kushtia police OC Nasir Uddin.
“Although other peddlers fled, Islam was caught in line of cross firing. He was rushed to the Kushtia state-run hospital where the doctor declared them dead,” said OC Uddin.
“Four police officers were also injured in the incident,” he said.
“A pistol, three rounds of ammunition and 380 yaba tablets were seized from the scene,” said the OC before adding, “The body has been kept at the hospital for autopsy.”
