TeknafTwo alleged drug peddlers have been killed in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila in what the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) described as a shootout.
The incident was reported late on Tuesday (Jul 16) from Shikalpara area in the upazila’s Jadimora, said BGB.
The deceased have been identified as 34-year-old Jabed Mia and 35-year-old Asmaul Saodagor.
"A group of drug peddlers were smuggling a large consignment of yaba tablets from Myanmar through Shikolpara area late on Tuesday. Upon seeing law enforcement, the peddlers opened fire on BGB, prompting them to fire back, triggering the shootout," BGB-2 commanding officer Lt Col Mohammad Foysal Hasan Khan.
“Although other peddlers fled, Asmaul and Jabed were caught in line of cross firing. They were first taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the doctor referred them to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital. They were declared dead on arrival at the hospital,” said Khan.
“10,000 yaba tablets, one locally-made firearm and three rounds of ammunition were seized from the scene,” he said.
The BGB official also claimed that three of its members-Md Motiur Rahman, Imran Hossain and Md Rezaul-were injured in the shootout.
