A Khulna court has sentenced five people to death over the rape and murders of a woman and her father four years ago.

Exim Bank employee Parvin Sultana and her father Iliyas Chowdhury were suffocated to death in their home on the night of Sept 19, 2015.

The convicts have admitted to gang-raping Parvin before the murder and trying to cover up by dumping the bodies in a septic tank.

Khulna's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Md Mohiduzzaman delivered the verdict on Tuesday (Jul 16), confirmed Public Prosecutor Farid Ahmed.
The convicts are, Pitil Islam, Shariful Islam, Palash, Syed and Liton. Amongst them, Shariful was tried as a fugitive.

Each of them has been slapped with fines of Tk 10,000 and Tk 100,000 each for the murder and rape case respectively.

Chowdhury’s son and Parvin’s brother Rezaul Alam Chowdhury Biplob filed a case against six to seven unnamed people on Sep 20.

Police arrested Liton over the matter who admitted to the rape and murder under section 164 on Sep 21. Biplob filed a rape case against five people the next day.

In May 2016, investigating officer Sub Inspector Md Kazi Babul Khan charged the five accused in court.
