At least nine people, including a newlywed couple and a child, have been killed when a train crashed into a car in Sirajganj.

The incident was reported around 6.30pm on Monday (Jul 15) from the district’s Ullapara.

“Several deaths have been reported when a microbus, which was part of a wedding party’s motorcade, was hit by a train on a level-crossing. Police have been sent to the spot,” said Ullapar police’s Inspector Md Golam Mostofa.

Locals said the Dhaka-bound ‘Padma’ train crashed into the car at the level crossing beside Panchakroshi Ali Ahmed High School at Ullapara.

That level crossing, on the north side of Salap Railway Station, has no gates, according to witnesses.

The victims include six men, two women, and a child.

Only the 25-year-old groom, Razan, and the 20-year-old bride, Sumaiya Khatun, have so far been identified.

“Our team is on the way to the scene,” said Inspector Harun Majumder of the Sirajganj railway police (GRP).

Locals said the newlyweds and their relatives were going to Kandapara at Sirajganj district town from Ullapara’s Ghatina.
