Man killed in Natore ‘shootout’

Shooter Manik alias Basu Manik was killed in a `shootout` with police in the early hours on Saturday (Jul 13).A man has been killed in Natore in what the police described as shootout.
The incident was reported around 2am on Saturday (Jul 12) from Tofa Kata intersection at Gopalpur in the district’s Lalpur Upazila, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Shooter Manik alias Basu Manik who police claimed was wanted in at least 15 cases filed for murder, car snatching and robbery.
“Manik was arrested on Jul 5 in a case for snatching motorbike after shooting the rider, a college student Al Amin, at Boraigram. In the interrogation, he confessed that he was involved in motorbike snatching and murdering Alok Barchi at Lalpur and snatching a three wheeler after murdering its driver at the same area,” said Lalpur police OC Nazrul Islam Juwel.
“For further investigation over the matters and to recover firearms, a joint team of Lalpur police and Boraigram police lodged a drive for Lalpur early hours of Saturday. On the way, as soon as the team reached at Tofa Kata intersection, Manik’s cohorts opened fire on them, in retaliate police had to fire back. During the shootout, Manik tried to flee from the scene and was caught in line of cross firing,” said OC Juwel.
“Manik was rushed to upazila health complex where the doctor declared him dead,” he said.
“Three police men were also injured in the incident and have been treated at Lalpur Upazila Health Complex,” he added.
“A foreign-made pistol and four rounds of ammunition were seized from the scene,” added the OC.
