The Rohingya camp near the no man’s land near the Tumbru canal under Ghumdhum Union in Cox’s Bazar is inundated. As a result, one thousand families are without shelter, facing crisis of fresh water and toilets.
Assistant meteorologist, Abdur Rahman, said: “In the last two days, Cox’s Bazar experienced 55 milimetre of rainfall and there may be light or heavy rain in the next 24 hours. The rain water cannot flow easily and is blocked by a barbed wire bridge constructed by Myanmar.”
This is the highest rainfall this season.
The residents of the camp said that though they have food, there is a crisis of clean water and toilets.”
There are three toilets and only one sewerage line for one thousand people.
A resident called Dil Mohammad, said: “We have been living here for some time, but now, the camp is under water due to heavy rain and heavy downward flow of water from the hills.”
“We are living in appalling conditions here and want justice from the international community,” he added.
Relief and rehabilitation commissioner, Mohamamd Abul Kalam, said: “We are inquiring about the situation at the camp which is inundated.”
When former foreign minister of Bangladesh AH Mahmud Ali visited Myanmar on Aug 10 last year, a proposal was made by Myanmar to distribute relief items through humanitarian organisations.
However, the people living near the no-man’s land refused to accept this. Earlier, Myanmar agreed to take back Rohingyas stranded near the no-man’s land to Rakhine without any condition. However, that initiative stalled.
