Two men, accused in a schoolboy abduction and murder case, were killed in a reported shootout with police at Mirpur Upazila in Kushtia on early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Nayem Malitha and Joyar Ali hailed from the village Chitlia.
The incident took place in Chitlia neighbourhood of Mirpur around 4:30am, police said.
Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said that they recovered the body of Deb Dutta, 8, a class III student of Chitlia Primary School, from the toilet of Nayem’s house on Monday.
Police arrested Nayem and Joyar in connection with the abduction and murder of Deb and later, conducted a raid in the village along with the duo to arrest other criminals.
When the team reached the village, their cohorts opened fire on law enforcers, triggering a gunfight between them, police said.
Nayem and Joyar sustained bullet injuries and were taken to Mirpur Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
Four policemen were injured and the lawmen recovered two pistols, nine-round bullets and two sharp weapons from the scene.
Earlier, on Jun 9, some unidentified persons abducted Deb Dutta after he went out of their house for school.
