Floating voters including a huge number of workers will be a crucial factor in the Gazipur City Corporation polls to be held Tuesday.
Out of the 1.13 million voters, only 40 per cent are local in the city while about 0.4 million are workers working in different factories in the area. The rest are professionals.
In the Gazipur polls, seven candidates are vying for mayor post but the main competition will be held between Awami League candidate Jahangir Alam and BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarkar.
In addition to mayor post, 254 will contest for 57 general councilor posts and for the 19 reserve seats, 84 candidates will compete.
Gazipur Workers Trade Union Gazipur district president Ziaur Rahman told Bangla Tribune, “About 0.4 million garment workers are voters here and they are the deciding factor in the city polls. About 20 percent of the workers are yet to take voting decision and he will win who can bag their votes.”
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corportaion (BSCIC) has two industrial zones, and another 500 garments factories and other small factories are also operate inside Gazipur city.
AL candidate Alam has assured the workers that if he is elected he would ensure fair wage for them and stand by them in time of their need.
On the other hand BNP candidate Hasan declared that he would work to establish the workers’ rights.
