Golam Mohammad Siraj BNP candidate Golam Mohammad Siraj has won the Bogura-6 by-polls by a large margin.
Returning Officer Mahbub Alam Shah unofficially announced him as the winner on Monday (Jun 24).
Siraj, who served as BNP’s district unit convener received 89, 742 votes while his Awami League opposition SMT Zaman Niketa received 32, 279 votes.
The returning officer said that a total of 1, 33,870 votes were cast at the 141 polling centres. The total number of voters were 3, 87,858 and voter turnout was 34.55 percent.
“People still have reservations about EVM voting. If the franchises were cast in ballots I would’ve gotten double the votes,” said Siraj.
“The vote culture has been ruined in the last 10 years,” he added.
Jatiya Party pick Nurul Islam Omar received 7,271 votes, Bangladesh Congress candidate Dr Mansur Rahman got 456 votes, Bangladesh Muslim League’s Mufti Mowlana Rafiqul Islam received 554 votes, independent candidates Minhaz Mandal and Syed Kabir Ahmed Mithu got 2,920 and 630 votes respectively.
The Bogura-6 constituency was declared vacant after BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was elected during the Dec 30 polls, refused to take oath.
