Nine get death in Juba League leader murder

 In 2014, local Juba League leader Monirul Islam was shot dead at the Shibganj Upazila Stadium area in Chapainawabganj.A court in Chapainawabganj has sentenced nine people to death in the 2014 murder of local Juba League leader Monirul Islam, who was also the treasurer of Sonamasjid Land Port C&F Agents Association.
On Thursday (Jun 20), District and Sessions Judge Md Sawkat Ali sentenced two others to life imprisonment and acquitted four others.
The following convicts received the maximum penalty: Akherul Islam, Sirajul Islam Munshi, Tahurul Islam Tutul, Abdul Malek, Sirajul Islam, Shariful Islam Sharif, Md Masud, Sirajul Islam Sentu, and Abdus Salam.
Parul Begum and Masud, alias Lalchand, were handed down sentences of life imprisonment.
The convicts have been fined Tk200, 000 each. Parul and Lalchand will have to spend another year in jail if they fail to pay the fine.
According to case details, the then-C&F Agents Association chief Akherul, vice-president Munshi, general secretary Tutul, and others were at odds with Monirul over transactions of the association's money.
The convicts took Monirul to Shibganj Upazila Stadium area on the evening of Oct 24, 2014 and shot him dead.
Monirul's wife Rahima Khatun filed a murder case with Shibganj police the next day. Police filed the charge sheet accusing 15 people on Jun 15, 2015.
