Four policemen of Bogra Sadar police were suspended and “closed for entry” to Bogra police lines after they reportedly tortured a businessman in custody on Saturday.
The accused are Sub Inspector (SI) Abdul Zabbar, assistant sub inspectors (ASIs) Earshad Ali, Niamotullah, and Constable Enamul Haque.
The victim, Shohan Babu alias Adar, 32, a businessman living in Sultanganjpara under Sadar police station was reportedly tortured in custody by the four policemen.
Bogra Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sonaton Chakrabarty, confirmed the matter and said: “The complaint against the police officials is being investigated. If we find there is truth to the allegations against our officers, we will take punitive action.”
According to sources, Adar of Sultanganjpara in the Utter Mor neighbourhood of Bogra town, was picked up by police from his home on Thursday night following a complaint by his business partner over a business dispute.
Adar said that Sub-Inspector Abdul Zabbar pressured him to negotiate and settle the matter with the partner. When he did not agree to do so, the police beat Adar mercilessly, leaving him seriously injured. Adar was taken to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital early yesterday.
Contacted, SM Bodiuzzaman, officer in-charge (OC) of Bogra Sadar police station, said they picked up Adar on the strength of a written complaint by Shathi Banu and her husband Bappi Mia. After Adar reached a compromise in the matter, the police release him from custody, he claimed. The OC also denied the allegations of Adar being physically tortured in police custody.
