Pregnant woman torture: Nakla OC to be withdrawn

Nakla police OC Kazi ShahnewajSherpur’s Nakla police OC Kazi Shahnewaj will be withdrawn from his post, for the negligence of duty over the torture of a pregnant housewife in May, causing her to have a miscarriage.
A withdrawal order had been issued from the police headquarters,” Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Aminul Islam of Sherpur Sadar Circle.
“Given that Nakla Upazila goes on polls on Jun 18, an Election Commission’s instruction is required,” said Islam adding the OC would be discharged right after receiving the EC order.
Meanwhile, Sub-Inspector Omar Faruk of Nakla police was attached to Sherpur Police Lines on Jun 13 over the same incident.
Doly Khanam, a pregnant housewife, was tied to trees, and kicked and punched, over a land dispute at Kaida village in Nakla Upazila on May 10. The torture led to her miscarriage, news agency UNB reports.
Although the police rescued the victim, there were allegations that no effective steps were taken.
A month later, video clips of the torture surfaced on social media.
On Jun 12, a case was recorded by Nakla police naming nine people, being ordered by the police superintendent.
Police arrested Nasima Akter, 40, one of the accused, and produced her before the court which sent her to custody.
Meanwhile, a three-member investigation committee, formed by the district police, filed a report to the police superintendent on Jun 14.
Investigations revealed negligence in duty by the OC, and the SI, sources said.
