An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Gazipur’s Tongi in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as a shootout.
The incident was reported from Nodi Bondor area in the early hours of Tuesday (Jun 4), said RAB.
The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Ismail Hossain.
There are a total of 17 drug cases against Hossain at Banani in Dhaka, Gopalganj and Faridpur police stations, Additional Superintendent of RAB Kamruzzaman told Bangla Tribune.
“Being tipped-off, a RAB patrol team conducted a drive in the area where, realizing RAB’s presence, Ismail’s associates opened fire at them,” said Kamruzzaman.
“The RAB team force fired back at them in self-defence, triggering the shootout. Hossain was caught in the cross-firing and rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead on arrival,” he said.
“Two RAB members have been injured in this incident,” added the elite force official.
