An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Mymensingh’s Ishwarganj Upazila in what the police described as shootout.
The incident was reported around 12.45am on Monday (May 13) from the upazila’s Harua area, said police.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Mostofa Hossain.
“Tipped-off, a joint team of detectives and Ishwarganj police conducted a raid in the area around 12:45am. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, a group of drug peddlers hurled brick chips and opened fire on the team. In retaliation, police fire back which triggered the shootout,” said Detective Branch (DB) of Police OC Shah Kamal Akand.
“After the incident, police rescued the injured Hossain at the scene and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), where the doctor declared him dead,” said Akand.
Police recovered 200g heroin, 100 yaba tablets and bullet shells from the scene,” he said before adding, “SI Mobarak Hossain and Lal Mia were injured in the incident.”
The body has been kept at the MMCH for autopsy, said the OC.
