An angry mob have beaten a local leader of ruling Awami League youth front Jubo League (JL) after he reportedly demanded extortion in Manikganj.
The incident took place at Boraid union in the district’s Saturia Upazila on Thursday (May 9).
The culprit, Subhash Rajbonshi, who is the organizing secretary of Saturia Upazila JL unit, denied the allegation, which he claimed a ‘confusion’ between him and a tobacco company officials over an invitation to join an Iftar party at the local JL office.
On the other, victim Inam Ali, a field supervisor of Japan Tobacco Company, said that Subhash demanded extortion from them and asked to take it to the local JL office.
As Ali did not appeared in the office, the JL leaders then threatened to pick him up.
Later, Rajbonshi along with his supporters came to the local tobacco sale centre and beat Ali.
Following the incident, Ali with the help of farmers beat Rajbonshi and forced them out.
“However, we didn’t take any legal actions after the local chairman assured to resolve the matter,’ said the tobacco company official.
Boraid Union Parishad Chairman Harun ur Rashid said, “When informed, I went to the spot. The incident occurred upon confusion.”
An arbitrary meeting was expected to be held on Friday (May 10) in the regard, according to the chairman.
When contacted, immediate past-JL general secretary Tanjid Ullah Pradhan said he had no knowledge of the incident.
“Organizational action will be taken upon receiving complaint,” Pradhan added.
“Nobody is yet to report,” said local police OC Motiar Rahman before adding legal action would be taken after investigation if anybody lodges complaint.
