Listed drug peddlers have gone into hiding, following a recent crackdown by law enforcing agencies in Sylhet.
Suspected drug peddlers in prison are not willing to file for bail as ‘shootouts’ are allegedly being conducted by Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
On the basis of anonymity, an advocate said: “two of my clients are currently in prison but are not willing to file bail pleas since several drug dealers were killed in the recent anti-drug raids by law enforcing agencies.”
One and a half month ago, they filed the bail pleas at least six times.” Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Court's Advocate Mahfuzur Rahman said,
“No one can be deemed guilty without a proper court proceeding; however, after the recent anti-narcotics drive, suspected drug peddlers are not willing to be present at court.”
Meanwhile, Sylhet jail superintendent, Abu Sayem, said: "the number of inmates related to drug cases increased recently; at present, we have about 500 such inmates."
