Road accidents kill 10 in 5 districts

In Chandpur, at least six people, including a woman and her son, were killed after a bus collided head-on with an autorickshaw in Shahrasti upazila around 9am.At least ten people have been killed and four have been injured in separate road accidents reported from different part of the country.

The accidents took place on Sunday (Apr 28) morning in Chandpur, Feni, Chuadanga, Laxmipur and Brahmanbaria.

In Chandpur, at least six people, including a woman and her son, were killed after a bus collided head-on with an autorickshaw in Shahrasti upazila around 9am.

The deceased have been identified as Jannatul Ferdous, 28, her son Ruman, 8, Ranjit Chandra, 52, Fakhrul Islam, 75, Abul Kalam, 62, and Shahjahan, 45.

Five autorickshaw passengers were killed on the spot in the accident on Chandpur-Cumilla regional road, while Shahjahan died on his way to the hospital, Shahrasti police OC Shah Alam said.

Two more autorickshaw passengers were also injured have been hospitalised.

In Feni, a 45-year-old travel agent named Khorshed Alam was killed and two others were injured when a truck hit an autorickshaw at Anandapur in Fulgazi on Sunday morning.

Two among the injured, who were admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital, are in critical condition, said the Hospital’s Resident Medical Officer Abu Taher.

In Chuadanga, a motorcyclist died after he was hit by a truck. The deceased has been identified as Shanto Miah, 30.

The accident was reported on Chuadanga-Meherpur road at Bhalaipur intersection in Sadar upazila around 5am, deputy director of Chuadanga fire service Abdus Salam said.

In Laxmipur, the death of a madrasa student in a road accident sparked protest at Shakchar area in Sadar upazila in the morning.

Yasin, 8, a class III student of local Hamid Miazi Madrasa, was killed after a speeding pickup van hit him while he was crossing road on his way to the madrasa around 10am.

Police later intervened and brought the situation under control, Md Lokman Hossain, Sadar police OC said.

In Brahmanbaria, a truck ran over and killed a farmer in the districts Sharail upzila, around 6am.

The deceased has been identified as Abdul Kuddus, 32.

Following the incident agitated locals blocked the road vehicular movement for some 20 minutes. Later, police intervened to bring the situation under control.
