Journalists in Habiganj Friday has staged demonstration as a court sent a local correspondent of a private television channel to jail a day after he was arrested over ‘false’ drugs charges.
A team of police went to the house of Sirajul Islam Jiban on Thursday night to arrest his brother for a false drug charge.
As Jibon protested, police brought him along with his brother to the police station and tortured them throughout the night.
Later, Jiban was treated at the upazila hospital on Friday morning.
Hearing the news, local journalists held a protest rally in front of the district press club office.
Meanwhile, Jibon was sent to jail after he was shown arrested in a case.
Habiganj Court OC Ohidur Rahman said, the court ordered to send JIban to jail after he was produced before it.
Later in the afternoon, journalists brought out a procession and held a rally in front of the Sadar police station, followed by blocking the road there.
Journalists, at the rally, demanded immediate release of JIban and punishment of the police members, who were responsible.
They also warned of tougher movement that includes boycotting news of the crackdown on drugs.
Journalists also called an urgent meeting for Saturday to decide on the next programme.
