AL, BNP yet to finalise candidates for BCC polls

AL, BNP yet to finalise candidates for BCC pollsAwami League and BNP have yet to finalise their candidates for the upcoming Barishal City Corporation polls.
The Election Commission has decided to hold the election at Barishal along with Sylhet and Rajshahi on July 30.
Barishal City AL president Golam Abbas Chowdhury told the Bangla Tribune, “We haven’t finalised our candidates.”
He said as the mayor candidate they would support Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, AL city joint secretary and son of Barishal district AL president Abul Hasanat Abdullah.
However, he said, Sheikh Hasina and the nomination board will take the final decision and they will all work for the party nominated persons.
BNP central joint secretary and first elected mayor of Barishal Mujibur Rahman Sarwar said, the party central leaders will make the final decision about taking part in any polls as they think the Election Commission has turned controversial.
He said, they are yet to finalise any candidate but if BNP decides to take part in the election, they would all give their maximum united efforts for winning.
Jatiya Party district chief Mohsin Ul Islam Habul said they would recommend central leader Iqbal Hossain Taposh as mayor candidate.
CPB district president Abul Kalam Azad said on behalf of Left Alliance, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal district president Manisha Chakrabarty would be nominated as the mayor candidate.
In the last BCC election held in 2013, BNP mayor candidate Ahsan Habib Kamal defeated his AL rival Shawkat Hossain Hiron by only 600 votes. In the election, the total voters were 2,11,257 who chose 30 councilors and 10 women for reserved seats.
