Two killed as villagers’ clash in Narsingdi

Google MapsAt least two people have been killed and five other injured after a clash broke out between two groups of villagers at Narsingdi’s Raipura upazila.
The incident was reported early on Tuesday (Mar 19) from Raipura Char area in the upazila’s Mirzarchar Union, said police.
The deceased have been identified as 32-year-old Iqbal and 31-year-old Aman Ullah.
Among the five injured, condition of three people were critical and they have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” Narsingdi Superintendent of police Zakir Hasan said.
“The other two injured are being treated at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital,” he added.
According to the locals and police sources, following the Upazila election at Mirzarchar union, supporters of newly elected chairman and Awami League leader Zafar Iqbal Manik and his polls’ opponent Faruqul Islam, who is also a ruling party leader, have been clashing over establishing dominance. Supporters of both men repeatedly engaged in clashes which at times turned violent.
On Tuesday, Faruk’s men attacked Manik’s supporters with firearms leading to at least seven being shot. Doctors pronounce two among them dead after they were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.
