Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie visited the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila on Monday (Feb 4).
She visited the Chakmarkul Rohingya camps in the afternoon and stayed three hours to interact with the refugees.
The actor, known for her various humanitarian efforts across the world in addition to her acting skills, landed at the Cox’s Bazar Airport on Monday morning. She is staying at a hotel in Inani.
She is visiting the camps as a special envoy of the UN refugee agency and likely to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her five-day visit.
Jolie listened to the horrifying and traumatizing experiences of the Rohingya women who were raped and persecuted by the Myanmar army.
“The Hollywood actor spoke to 30 Rohingya women at the camp’s D-block,” said Chakmarkul 21 no Rohingya camp leader Rashid Ullah.
He added that she embraced the women and spent some time with the children as well.
“Angelina Jolie first visited a BRAC community centre at the camp,” said Jahir Ahmed, a refugee of the G-block of the same camp.
“She met with the BRAC employees, Rohingya community leaders and representative of various NGO’s,” he added.
She is scheduled to visit the Kutupalong Extension Rohingya camp-4, on Tuesday (Feb 5). She is likely to hold discussions with BRAC, UNHCR and Relief International officials.
Jolie will be communicating with the refugees there and visit the various charity organizations.
Thousands of Rohingyas crossed over to Bangladesh since the Myanmar military-led ethnic cleansing drives in the Rakhine state in 2017.
Jolie had wanted to visit Bangladesh last year but it was cancelled due to the countrywide student movement.
In May of 2018, Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra visited the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar as a UNICEF ambassador.
