Police in Chattogram have detained one over the death of a schoolgirl, whose body was found on the banks of a river.
The victim was identified as Tasfia Amin, who lived with her family in the port city’s OR Nizam Road.
On Wednesday morning, locals in Patenga reported to police after spotting a body on the shores of the Karnaphuli River.
Police had then said the body had slight marks of injuries and they were yet to confirm its identity.
Later in the day, Amin’s family identified the body.Patenga police OC Abul Kashem Bhuiyan said that the family told them Amin had gone out with a male friend the previous afternoon.
“We have picked him up from his home in Khulshi and he is being quizzed,” the police officer said, but declined to provide any further details.
Asked whether it was a case of homicide, OC Bhuiyan declined to comment and said, “The investigation is on and we are waiting for the autopsy report.”
Quoting the victim’s family, police said the last time the family traced Tasfia was around 6pm on Tuesday, when she spoke with her mother on phone. They started to look for her after 9pm and on the next day, confirmed that the body recovered by police was her.
