Barapukuria plant. The Barapukuria Coal Mine has resumed operations after almost three months.

Coal extraction started on Friday (Sep 7) from the mine’s phase 1314 on an experimental basis.
The managing director of Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) Fazlur Rahman told Bangla Tribune “Production started at around 9 pm after the construction of the tunnel for phase 1314 was complete. We were able to extract 529 tonnes of coal.”
He added that around 2,000 – 2,200 tonnes of coal can be mined within the next couple of days.
The Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant, which uses the coal supplied from the mine, says they have no knowledge on the issue.
“We do not know when operations of the plant can be resumed,” said the plant’s Chief Engineer Abdul Hakim Sarker.
On Jul 22, power production at the plant was halted after the mine ran out of coal deposits a week earlier.
On Jul 19, it was found that around 145,000 tonnes of coal from the mine’s yard was missing.
Several officials were suspended following the incident as the government has opened an inquiry into it while the Anti-Corruption Commission is conducting a separate probe.
