Erosion of Meghna in Narsingdi, 150 houses disappeared

Houses disappeared in the rivers (Image- Correspondent)Around 150 houses of Narsingdi’s Karimpur Union have disappeared into the river due to the erosion of the river Meghna. Thousands of people are forced to live in floating boats and under the open sky. Meanwhile, people moved another 150 houses fearing erosion. Not only that, local people fear that the entire union will disappear in the river if permanent actions are not taken immediately to stop the erosion. Meanwhile, the Water Development Board (PUBO) is trying to stop the erosion by putting sand sacks on river banks.
After talking with the locals, it is known that from last the Saturday night (2 September) river erosion started suddenly in the Sutkikandi and Srinagar village, the char area of the Karimpur Union of Sadar Upazila. As a result, until Tuesday (5 September) hundred acres of crop lands along with 150 houses of these two villages disappeared in the river.  Due to the possibility of erosion, people have already been moved more than 150 houses of these two villages in their own initiatives. After losing houses, thousands of the residents of these villages are living in the floating boats and under the open sky with their children, women and old people. Losing homes, cattle, and goods they are living in a miserable condition.

As the erosion of the river Meghna started suddenly, panic has spread among the residences of the riverside. Meanwhile, the PUBO is trying to stop the erosion by putting sand sacks on river banks. Not only that, local people fear that the entire union will disappear in the river if the permanent action is not taken immediately to stop the erosion.

Golbahar Begum of Shutkikandi Village said, ‘River erosion has started from the afternoon of Eid day. Later on Monday afternoon, my two houses went to the river. We are now living in relative's house.'

Rumela Begum of the same village said, ‘My homestead went to the river. Now I am in a helpless situation with five children. If the government does not arrange accommodation for us, I don’t know where I should go.’

The elderly Yasmin Begum said, ‘In the morning I had a home and in the afternoon the river took everything. From then, I'm under the open sky without anything to eat. '

Dr. Subhash Chandra Biswas, district commissioner of Narsingdi said on this, ‘After inspecting the erosion affected area financial aids have been provided for the rehabilitation of the victims and the administration is providing housing for the victims.’

PUBO`s effort ot stop erosion by sand sacksExecutive Engineer Abul Hossain of Water Development Board of Narsingdi said, 'This area was already at risk of erosion. Keeping this in mind, we have already sent a dam construction project to the higher authority. To prevent erosion initiatives have been taken to build permanent dams at a cost of Tk 15 crore soon. We hope to start the project after the monsoon. "
