Highway Police has started to use radar gun, also known as speed gun at Dhaka-Sylhet highways to monitor the speed of vehicles.
The initiative, taken to reduce road accidents caused by reckless driving, was launched on Tuesday, said Narsingdi SP Saifullah Al Mamun.
He said, “Police has taken a number of initiatives to reduce road accidents on Narsingdi Highways such as checking drivers’ license and vehicle fitness. In continuation with these steps, speed gun has been introduced.”
Additional SP Zakir Hasan, Shafiur Rahman, Traffic Inspector Golam Mowla and District’s Bus Owners’ Association’s President Jahangir Alam were present at the launching programme, among others.Mowla said, “Speed limit on the highway is 80 km per hour. The speed gun will capture any vehicle that exceeds the limit and a still image of that vehicle will be printed out. The violating vehicle will then be fined.”
He, however, said “Our main goal is to create awareness, not to fine anybody.”
Earlier on Aug 8, Highway Police started to use speed gun in Cumilla on the Dhaka-Chittagong highways.
A radar gun is a device used to measure the speed of moving objects. It is used in law-enforcement to measure the speed of moving vehicles and is often used in professional spectator sport, for things such as the measurement of bowling speeds in cricket, speed of pitched baseballs, athletes and tennis serves.
