The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA)has ordered all its member factories to shut down operations amid the Covid-19 outbreak.
In a statement addressing the factory owners on Friday (Mar 27), the knitwear manufacturers’ association said that the factories will remain closed till Apr 4.
The statement said that saving the people was the topmost priority and the industry will survive only when people do.
Previously on Mar 26, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recommended all its member factories to keep their units closed until Apr 4.
According to BGMEA, some 959 factories reported 826.42 million pieces worth $2.67 billion export orders were cancelled and held up by global buyers until Thursday.
However, on Mar 25, the prime minister announced Tk 50 billion in virus fund to be used only for paying wages and allowances to the workers and other employees of the export-oriented industries.
