File photoIn the last one decade, general people have become conscious about the usage of LED lights but not about other electronic products. Specialists say that this was not possible due to lack of planning.
Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) says that it wants to go for star labelling to improve the standard of electronic equipment.
Engineer Dr Izaz Hossain says, “People understand the concept of saving energy in the usage of lights but in the industrial sector, equipment like AC, fridge, oven and iron take a lot of load and no effort has been seen as yet to make these sustainable.”
Though a few companies bring better quality equipment, most are of low standard with very little option for power saving. SREDA has taken some initiatives though they have not been implemented.
We need to make others electrical appliances sustainable and a policy is needed in this regard, added Dr Izaz.
Once sustainable policy is adopted, energy usage can be brought down by 15 per cent in 2021 and 20 per cent by 2030.
Of the power manufactured in the country, 30 per cent is used in the residential sector and a sustainable move is to start a labelling programme. Once there is star labelling, low quality equipment will disappear from the market.
LED technology is currently being used in television, computer monitors and other items; in similar fashion, inverter air conditioner saves 60 per cent power compared to ordinary air conditioner. Energy can also be saved in electric fans, ballast and motors but people are not aware of this and often shun these items.
