Owned by Norway-based Telenor, Grameenphone is the largest operator in Bangladesh.Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has responded to a legal notice, served by Telenor Group to President Abdul Hamid, seeking arbitration of a Tk 125.79 billion audit claim with the telecom regulator.
BTRC Chairman Md Jahurul Haque confirmed the matter on Sunday (Dec 22), reports English daily Dhaka Tribune.
Official at the telecom regulator said the response stated that there is no way for arbitration as the matter is a sub-judice one.
Telecoms Minister Mustafa Jabbar, on Dec 19, told reporters that Grameenphone sent a legal notice to the president.
Telenor Group, parent company of Bangladesh's leading mobile phone operator Grameenphone (GP), in its legal notice to president sought for an arbitration over the audit claim with BTRC.
Minister Jabbar said then it was unacceptable as the country's top court ordered GP to pay Tk 20 billion in three months.
“We will not go for negotiation with GP until it complies with the order," he said.
